Luminosity selection for gamma-ray bursts

نویسندگان

چکیده

Aims. There exists inevitable scatter in the intrinsic luminosity of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). If there is relativistic beaming source, viewing angle variation necessarily introduces function (ILF). Scatter ILF can cause selection bias where sources detected at distance have a greater median than those close by. Median divides any given population into equal halves. When functional form distribution unknown, it be more robust diagnostic that use trial forms. Method. In this work, we employ statistical test based on and to class models for GRBs. We assume GRB jet has finite opening orientation random relative observer. calculate L as redshift by simulating GRBs empirically theoretically, luminosity-vs.-redshift Swift data order compare theoretical results with observed ones. The method accounts fact may go undetected some redshifts. Results. find extremely insensitive on-axis (i.e., maximal) jet.

Luminosity and Variability of Collimated Gamma-ray Bursts

Within the framework of the internal shock model, we study the luminosity and the variability in gamma-ray bursts from collimated fireballs. In particular we pay attention to the role of the photosphere due to e± pairs produced by internal shock synchrotron photons. It is shown that the observed Cepheid-like relationship between the luminosity and the variability can be interpreted as a correla...

Energetics and Luminosity Function of Gamma-ray Bursts

Gamma-ray bursts are believed to be some catastrophic event in which material is ejected at a relativistic velocity, and internal collisions within this ejecta produce the observed γ-ray flash. The angular size of a causally connected region within a relativistic flow is of the order the angular width of the relativistic beaming, γ. Thus, different observers along different lines of sights coul...

Quantifying the Luminosity Evolution in Gamma-ray Bursts

We estimate the luminosity evolution and formation rate for over 900 GRBs by using redshift and luminosity data calculated by Band, Norris, & Bonnell (2004) via the lag-luminosity correlation. By applying maximum likelihood techniques, we are able to infer the true distribution of the parent GRB population’s luminosity function and density distributions in a way that accounts for detector selec...

Low Luminosity Gamma-ray Bursts as a Unique Population: Luminosity Function, Local Rate, and Beaming Factor

The newly discovered GRB 060218 is a nearby event with low luminosity, resembling GRBs 980425 and 031203. The fact that it was discovered by Swift slightly over 1-year operation suggests that the GRB rate of these low luminosity GRBs (LL-GRBs) should be much higher than previous expected, and that they form a distinct new class of GRBs with respect to the conventional high luminosity GRBs (HL-G...
